Things To Do
Here are some ideas and resources on what to do and where to go. Close by you have Marbella, Puerta Banus, Gibraltar, Ronda and many other resorts, villages and beaches.
La Cala de Mijas
This once small fishing village has developed into a hive of tourism in recent years, but it has managed to retain its Andalucian sea-side village atmosphere. There is a twice weekly market, coffee shops, bars, and supermarkets. The long beaches are well cared for and clean, with soft golden sand and breath-taking views making them the finest on this coastline. Some wonderful restaurants and fine dining can be found around town or overlooking the sea. There are also nice beach bars where Spanish families gather at the weekends for long lunches of fresh barbequed sardines and salad and the cold beer tastes especially good! Saturday nights in the hot summer months of July and August are magical in La Cala. The promenade becomes a festival of classical music and Flamenco dancing. With the outline of the old 16th Century watchtower of Torre Vieja as a backdrop and the moon reflecting down on the sea, the village celebrates a season of Noches de Luna y Playa (Nights of Moon and Beach).Various outdoor activities are within a short drive of La Cala. There are several locations in the La Cala hills to enjoy pony-trekking, with professional guides offering riding lessons for the less experienced rider. Or you may prefer to watch the horse races at the fantastic Hipodromo del Sol, located in the hills above La Cala, offering night-time racing during the summer.
Mijas
Mijas white buildings are perched high up on the mountain side, and its narrow winding streets have spectacular views of the pine clad mountains behind and the coastline far below. On the central square you will see the ever-patient donkeys lined up. Adorned with colourful saddles and tassels, they serve as little taxis and can be hired for rides around the town. It is also good to meander around by foot and there are lovely squares with restaurants to sit outside for a drink or a meal. It's touristy but not to be missed!
